鉄分の欠乏による貧血や、嚥下が困難になる咽頭内の蜘蛛の巣状膜増殖を特徴とする疾患。プラマー・ビンソン症候群である場合、食道がんを発生する危険性が高くなる。「Paterson-Kelly syndrome（パターソン‐ケリー症候群）」，「sideropenic dysphagia（鉄欠乏性嚥下困難症）」とも呼ばれる。
