上皮細胞表面に発生し、その下の支持組織に向かって下方成長するがんの一種。鼻腔や副鼻腔、または尿路（膀胱、腎盂、尿管、尿道）で発生する。鼻腔や副鼻腔で発生した場合、鼻詰まりなどの副鼻腔炎と似た症状を生じることがある。尿路で発生した場合は、血尿が出ることがある。
