深刻または生命にかかわる疾患を有する患者の生活の質（QOL）を改善するために行われるケア。支持療法の目標は、疾患の症状、疾患の治療によって起こる副作用、疾患やその治療に関係した心理的、社会的、精神的問題を、予防するまたは出来るだけ早く治療/対処することにある。「palliative care（緩和ケア）」、「comfort care（緩和ケア）」、「symptom management（症状管理）」とも呼ばれる。
