大腸の中で最も長い部分であり、それぞれの端が小腸と肛門へとつながっている管状の器官である。結腸では水分を除去し、部分的に消化された食物から栄養素と電解質を取り除く。残った物質である固形廃棄物は便と呼ばれ、結腸から直腸へ移動し、肛門から体外へ排出される。
