高エネルギー音波（超音波）を体内の組織や器官で反射させ、エコーを生じさせる検査法。超音波装置のモニター上にエコーパターンが現れ、ソノグラムと呼ばれる体内組織の画像が映し出される。「ultrasonography（超音波検査）」とも呼ばれる。
