胸壁の内側を覆う組織にがんが認められ、さらに、胸部の同じ側に限って、肺の表面、横隔膜（肺と心臓の下にあって胸部と腹部を分けている薄い筋肉の膜）の表面、心臓を包む袋の表面にがんが認められる場合もある。「stage I malignant mesothelioma（I期悪性中皮腫）」とも呼ばれる。
