医学では、うつ病、注意欠陥障害（小児期に不注意、衝動性、多動性が単独または組み合わせで発生する、よくみられる疾患）、ナルコレプシー（制御不能な眠気を引き起こす睡眠障害）の治療に用いられる一群の薬物。 刺激薬は脳の活動度、覚醒度、注意力、活力を高める。また、刺激薬には血圧、心拍数、呼吸数を高める効果もある。
