遺伝物質としてDNAではなくRNAを持つウイルスの一種。逆転写酵素と呼ばれる酵素を使って宿主細胞のDNAの一部となる。これにより宿主細胞中にウイルスのコピーが大量に作られる。エイズ（AIDS）の原因ウイルスであるヒト免疫不全症ウイルス（HIV)は、レトロウイルスの1種である。
