胸壁の内面を覆う組織と、同じ側の胸部のリンパ節にがんが認められる。胸部の同じ側に限られるが、肺の表面、横隔膜（肺と心臓の下にあり、胸部と腹部を分けている薄い筋肉）の表面、心臓を包む袋の表面にもがんが認められる場合もある。II期悪性中皮腫は進行期の悪性中皮腫である。
