扁平上皮細胞（魚の鱗のように見える薄く平らな細胞）から発生するがん。扁平上皮細胞は、皮膚の表面を構成する組織、体内の中空臓器の内面、呼吸と消化の経路内などに認められる。「epidermoid carcinoma（類表皮がん）」とも呼ばれる。
