がんの場合、腫瘍内のがん細胞の成熟（発達）度合いを示す。分化した腫瘍細胞は正常細胞に似ており、正常細胞の構造や機能をもたず制御不能な状態で増殖する未分化または低分化腫瘍細胞に比べると、ゆっくりと増殖し拡がる傾向にある。
