肺の組織から発生して体内の別の部位に転移する可能性のある侵攻性の（増殖が速い）がん。このがん細胞を顕微鏡で見ると、小さな楕円形をしている。
呼吸器系の解剖図；気管と両方の肺およびその肺葉と気道を示す。リンパ節と横隔膜も示されている。肺に吸い込まれた酸素は肺胞の薄い膜を通過して血流に入っていく（拡大図を参照）。
