がんは前立腺でのみ発見される。直腸指診では発見できず、画像によっても認められない。通常は良性前立腺過形成（前立腺組織の過成長が起こった状態）など他の理由で手術した際に、偶然発見される。「stage A1 prostate cancer（A1期前立腺がん）」とも呼ばれる。
