脳や脊髄の周囲に過剰に溜まった液体を排出するために用いられる方法。シャント（長く細いチューブ）を脳室から皮膚の下を通して体の別の部位（通常は腹部）に留置する。シャントを介して排出された脳からの過剰な液体は、体内のどこかの部位で吸収されることになる。
