肺気腫は肺の肺胞（小さな気嚢）に影響を及ぼす疾患である。肺の中における酸素と二酸化炭素の交換は、肺胞の壁の中で行われている。気腫では肺胞が異常に膨張し、壁が破壊されることによって呼吸が困難となる。喫煙する人や慢性気管支炎を有する人では、気腫のリスクが増大する。
